First Transplant Patient in BioHub Trial No Longer Needs Insulin Therapy

In a clinical trial performed at Miami University (Diabetes Research Institute of its BioHub) a team of researchers succeeded in treating a woman diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 1 completely; therefore she won’t need to insulin therapy again after undergoing an islets transplant surgery, but before illustrating this trial; we will know at first what are the reasons, symptoms, and complications of diabetes mellitus type 1.

    Diabetes mellitus type 1 causes

In general, diabetic people suffer from an elevation in the blood glucose level, which may occur due to a decrease in the secretion of insulin from the pancreas, or when the insulin which is being made in the body cannot enter the cells.

The importance of Insulin comes from its main role in the entrance of glucose into body cells; so when there is any defect in the insulin level; the glucose elevates than normal in the blood and leads to serious health complications.

There are 2 types of diabetes; type 1 and type 2, Type 1; diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM 1) occurs when the pancreas makes little or no insulin; leading to the accumulation of glucose and energy in the blood, and thus causing a well-known health condition called (Hyperglycemia).

The exact reason of DM 1 isn’t known yet, but researchers think that this disease occurs due to the effect of some microorganisms or toxins on the Beta cells, which are responsible for the secretion of insulin inside the pancreas; therefore, it can’t produce enough amount of insulin.

And because in the case of hyperglycemia the body can’t get energy from glucose, it begins to search for another source of energy, like breaking down fats and proteins.

Diabetes mellitus type 1 symptoms and complications

There are many symptoms and complications which appear in DM type 1 patients in different ratios, including:

    • Extraordinary thirst and increase in appetite.
    • Feeling tired.
    • A defect in mental functions
    • Increase the rate of Urination
    • Highly weight loss.
    • Slow wounds healing
    • Blurred vision.

And there are less common symptoms of DM type 1, such as:

    • Nausea and vomiting.
    • Pain in stomach and abdomen.
    • Ketoacidosis leads to a change of the breath smell to a fruity smell.
    • Loss of awareness.
    • Increase the heartbeat rate.

The most serious complications which may occur to diabetic people include:

    • The blood glucose level may decrease more than normal due to taking more insulin, too much stress, or missing a meal which leads to a health condition called (Hypoglycemia).
    • On the long-term; DM type 1 leads to huge damage to nerves, eyes, kidneys, blood vessels, and heart attack
    • Increase the risk of infection.

diabetes type 1 treatment without insulin

Now, we have to return to our main address of this article, how diabetes mellitus type 1 patient can be treated completely; so he has no need to use insulin injections again?

In a clinical trial performed at Miami University (DRI BioHub) it showed how the diabetic woman gets rid of DM 1, as follows:

Wendy Peacock is a Woman who suffer from DM 1 for more than 20 years since she was 17 years old, and she always been exposed to unconsciousness due to hypoglycemia, and she also the first person that completely treated from DM 1 through a clinical trial in which she received a transplant of (a bioengineered mini-organ) and this small organ contain islets cells mimic the pancreatic islets of Langerhans cells which produce insulin naturally. This organ restores the secretion of natural insulin in patients with DM 1, so that, the patient no longer needs to supplemental insulin injections.

how to cure type 1 diabetes permanently?

Camillo Ricordi, (M.D., Director of the Diabetes Research Institute) and Stacy Joy (Director of the DRI’s Cell Transplant Center) said that: Islet transplantation has been used for many years but only in the liver, and many trials showed that the liver is not the suitable organ for this transplantation; because it leads to some adverse effects and inflammatory reactions which damage the Islets cells.

The BioHub also illustrated that instead of the liver, they transplanted the islets in a part of Peacock’s intestine called (the omentum); because this part contains highly vascularized tissue covering the abdominal area.

The scientific research team made a biodegradable scaffold through the combination between the patient blood plasma and the thrombin enzyme. The donor’s islets were implanted within this biodegradable scaffold, so the mixture turned into a gel-like material that strongly sticks to the omentum and thus holds the islets in place.

After that, the omentum folded over the scaffold, and over time; the patient body will absorb the formed gel and leaving the islets intact, and new blood vessels will be formed to supply the islets with nutrients and oxygen, therefore protecting transplanted human pancreatic islets from dying

    Conclusion

As a result, There’s a great success in treating Wendy Peacock from diabetes mellitus type 1 completely and she now no longer needs to take insulin, which considered a great hope for diabetes type 1 treatment without insulin

A video that telling more about BioHub and Wendy Peacock’s story

At the end of our article, it is worth mentioning that many countries started right now applying this type of insulin therapy replacement for people who don’t have any positive results with DM1 insulin traditional therapy.

Promising   new drug for high blood pressure  According to one trial, a new medicine could help lower chronic  high blood pressure for up to six months after a single injection. It’s called  zilebesiran  If effective, zilebesiran might give a more convenient approach of managing hypertension , which is currently treated with daily medications. More than half of people diagnosed with hypertension, do not take all of their prescription medication regularly, resulting in inconsistency in blood pressure control. Experts believe that better care of the patients whom suffering from high blood pressure could lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and premature mortality. New drug for high blood pressure – zilebesiran The early stage clinical trials were carried out across four UK sites by an international team that included scientists from the University of Edinburgh’s Center for Cardiovascular Science.
